About GRE

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that is required to be taken by students seeking admission to graduate schools. The exam has been developed to evaluate the verbal, analytical and mathematical skills of the candidates. GRE is a computer-based test and has a user-friendly design. Individuals applying to graduate schools in order to pursue a Masters of Science (MS) or MBA are required to take the exam.

What is GRE General Test and why should you take the GRE?

The GRE General Test is the world’s largest assessment program for graduate admissions. The full form of GRE is Graduate Record Examination. Students seeking admission in MS courses in different fields in the US and various other countries appear for GRE General Test. Through this test, a candidate is evaluated on his analytical writing skills, quantitative ability, and verbal reasoning skills. They are conducted around the year, and candidates can appear for the general test as per their convenience. Majority of the students opt for this test as most of the universities world over accept this exam.

What is GRE Subject Test and why should you take the GRE?

The GRE Subject Test evaluates the candidates’ ability on a subject. The subject tests are conducted for the following areas: Mathematics, Literature (English), Physics and Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry (Cell and Molecular Biology). Generally, this test is required for getting admission in specialized courses. Apart from this, this test is conducted only thrice a year in April, September, and October and is available only in paper delivered format. 

These subject tests help to make your application stand out from the rest by highlighting your subject knowledge and skill level of a subject. Each subject test is intended for those students who have a bachelor’s degree disciplines.

Is it better to appear in GRE more than once?

Yes, usually your score improves from one attempt to another. If you have some good days of preparation its better to give it twice especially for students applying in university with a compulsory GRE requirement

GRE result

Your official test scores will be available in your account on the GRE website. They will be sent to the universities of your choice within six weeks of your test date. You will receive an email from ETS that your official GRE result is available in your account.

How long after the test can I use my scores?

GRE scores are valid for five years after the testing year in which you tested. However, this varies from university to university.

GRE TEST STRUCTURE

GRE Pattern

GRE exam pattern is as follow- three sections, namely, Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. The Analytical Writing section will always be the first, whereas, the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and unscored sections may appear in any order. Along with the time duration difference, the pattern also differs for paper-based and online exams.

1 :Analytical Writing

The analytical writing section aims to measure the test taker’s ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively, support ideas with relevant reasons and examples, examine claims and accompanying evidence, sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion and control the elements of standard written English.

2 :Verbal Reasoning

The verbal reasoning section aims to measure the test taker’s ability to analyze and draw conclusions from discourse, reason from incomplete data, identify author’s assumptions and/or perspective, select important points, distinguish major from minor or relevant points, summarize text, understand the structure of a text, understand the meanings of words, sentences and entire texts and understand relationships among words and concepts. 3 :Quantitative Reasoning

The quantitative reasoning section aims to measure the test taker’s ability to understand quantitative information, interpret and analyze quantitative information, solve problems using mathematical models, and apply basic mathematical skills and elementary mathematical concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics. GRE RESGITERTAION PROCESS AND FEE

How to Register for GRE?

The GRE is offered at testing centers throughout the year in Pakistan. You can register for the test online, by phone, fax or email. Learn about how to register using one of these options. The deadline to register for a computer-based test online and by phone is seven days prior to the test date if seats are still available. Registrations by mail must be received at least four weeks before the requested first-choice date. However, early registration is advisable to ensure availability at your preferred testing location.

Call your local center or click here for details and to book your test. While in theory you could sign up for the GRE with only two days’ notice, don’t depend upon this luxury. Book your test at least one month prior to your desired test date.

GRE TEST CENTRES IN PAKISTAN

There are three local offices that conduct the GRE in Pakistan:

The application fee for GRE General Test is $205 worldwide, while GRE Subject Test costs $150 worldwide. Also, candidates have to pay for special handling requests like:

  • Late registration fee: $25
  • Standby testing: $25
  • Rescheduling fee: $50   
  • Changing the test center: $50

Apart from this, candidates are charged $50 if they want to change a subject in the subject test.

What is the Identification requirement for GRE candidates in Pakistan?

All test takers in Pakistan must present a valid passport as their ID (Identification Document). Please note that without a passport, you will not be admitted at the Test Center on your test date.

The passport you present must:

  • be valid, original, and legible
  • bear your name in the Roman alphabet exactly as you provided when you made your test appointment (including the order and placement of the names)
  • have your date of birth exactly as the date provided when you made your test appointment
  • include a recent, recognizable photograph and your signature and date of birth

GRE TEST DATES/ CALENDAR
So if the deadline for your application is November, you should choose a test date for September. If you feel the need to retake GRE exam, you can take it in October again. So you need to make a judicious decision about when you need to start preparing for GRE.

–   Among thousands of foriegn universities, 14 Pakistani universities including LUMS and SZABIST consider GRE scores for admissions in their various programs.

–    GRE is standardized and specifically tells you about question structures and format. This way, it helps you prepare in a structured fashion. –    You can take GRE any day of the year from Monday to Thursday. Computer based test Multiple times a year (depends on availability the test centre). Paper-based test upto 3 times a year in October, November & February.
