What is the SAT and how is it structured?
The SAT is a standardized, multiple-choice test used by most U.S. colleges and universities for admissions and placement decisions. SAT scores can also be used to determine scholarship eligibility. The test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and given nationally (in Pakistan) six times a year. The SAT is undergoing some big changes in 2005.

The SAT is currently a seven-section, three-hour exam. Three of the sections are Verbal, three are Math, and one is experimental. The experimental section, used by ETS strictly for its own research, can be either Verbal or Math and is not counted toward your final score. The seven sections appear in a slightly different order every time the SAT is administered.

How is the SAT scored?
Students taking the SAT before
March 12, 2005 will receive two scores on the SAT, one for Math and one for Verbal. Each subject is scored on a scale of 200 to 800. The national average is approximately 500 in each subject (1000 combined). However, most competitive colleges look for significantly higher scores. While the total possible score on the current SAT is 1600, it will be 2400 on the new SAT.

When I can take the SAT?
In Pakistan, SAT is offered every year in October, November, December, January, June (see table below for upcoming SAT dates and registration deadlines.

What fees are associated with the SAT?
The fee to take the SAT is $60.5. It will be around $65 from next year with changed SAT.

Why Should I take the SAT?
First of all it is mandatory requirement for students applying for bachelor’s degree in U.S. In Pakistan, universities have developed their own aptitude tests for admissions that are more or less similar to SAT.

SAT scores to a large extent would determine how well you would perform in the admission tests taken in Pakistani universities. For example: IBA and LUMS both conduct their own tests that are very similar to the SAT. If you score between 900-1100 in SAT you are most likely to fail in the admission test of the top colleges. If you score between 1100-1250 you are expected to pass by few marks. If you score above 1250 you must pass the test easily in any university. Therefore, SAT will serve as a benchmark for your performance and will help you in letting you know your weak areas. You can then work on them in long term and improve your chances to get into the top program of your choice.

For more specific information on the importance of SAT scores at the schools to which you are applying, contact the admissions offices at those schools.

Which Pakistani Universities requires SAT?
None. But all have the test very similar to SAT. In fact, most universities make their test out of SAT. Most of the universities do ask for the scores and if you have done it well on SAT it adds to your advantage.

But still, it is the single most important thing that will increase your chances to get selected in top university. Students clearing the test in IBA, LUMS have generally given SAT.

Is it better to appear in SAT more than once?
Yes, usually your score improves from one attempt to another. If you have some good days of preparation its better to gave it twice especially for students applying in university with a compulsory SAT requirement.

Is there a negative marking on SAT?
Yes, it is 0.25 for every wrong except for 10 students response question in the mathematics section.

Should you make Guesses on SAT?
Yes, an educated one. If you have eliminated 2 to 3 choices out of 5 you should guess.

Can you write on your booklet? Yes, you can. It will be a pat of dustbin once you are done with test.

Are Calculators allowed? Yes, they are but not of all type.

What is the Identification requirement for SAT candidates in Pakistan?

A valid Passport is a must for Pakistani citizen.

Can I cancel my scores?
Yes. If you finish the test and think you may want to cancel your scores, you should ask the test supervisor for a "Request to Cancel Test Scores" form. You may submit the completed form immediately at the testing center, or you can think about it for a day or two before mailing it to ETS. However, ETS must receive your request form no later than the Wednesday after the test.

How do I register for the SAT?
Registration deadlines fall approximately five weeks before each test date. There are two options for the registration. You can register by mail or through online.

To register by mail, simply fill out the registration form in the College Board's Bulletin for the SAT Program. You can obtain a free copy of this publication from your school's guidance counselor. Or you can call ETS at 609-771-7600 and they'll send you one free of charge.

To register online visit www.collegeboard.com. This is the easier option and requires a Credit Card.
