In order to graduate from the MS Programme, students will be required to complete 45 units of course work. All MS courses are of 3 units except the seminars, which are of one unit each. There are three broad course groups.

  1. Basic courses.

  2. Required foundation courses.

  3. Advanced core courses and electives.

I) Basic Courses

Students are expected to have studied Basic Computer Science courses. in case of deficiency, students will need to take the necessary course(s). The credit units for any courses taken for this purpose will not be counted towards the MS degree units.

II) Required Foundation Course

These courses are required for the MS Programme if not already taken during earlier studies (undergraduate or graduate). In case credit has not been counted for these courses at LUMS or any other institution towards a degree, the units earned for these courses can be credited towards the MS to a maximum of 18 units. If the course taken is of 4 or more units, credit will be given for 3 units only.

III) Advanced Core Courses and Electives*

A minimum of 24 units must be attempted from the courses given in this group to fulfil the 45-unit graduation requirement.

The MS Programme has flexible structure and can accommodate students with varied backgrounds. The period of study for this programme for a particular person depends on the individual's prior education and experience. Students holding degrees in Computer Science (CS) and related studies can complete the programme requirements in one academic year after successfully completing the various requirements for graduation. However, such students will need to produce course descriptions from their previous study in order to get waivers for prerequisite courses. A person with a non-CS background may have no spend additional time in completing prerequisite courses; the duration in this case will depend on the nature of prior courses taken.

The University's policy is to admit students purely on merit, based on:
  • Academic record

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

  • Information provided in the application form
